Parrots

Parrots vibrant
Red, yellow, blue and green
Exotic squawks rip through the air
Sickly reek of rotting carcasses
And the lions stare
Parrots shriek louder and louder and the lions stare
The din rises colouring the air
Lions stare greedily
Everything like the birds of prey cage
Waiting and waiting

For me the bird represents liberation in its ability to transcend the laws of gravity. Its flight completes its beauty. What possible pleasure can one get from seeing it trapped in a cage ? In my work the bird symbolises our spirit trapped in our need for absolute control. This form of pride binds our spirits and separates us from God, we become fragmented leaving only a small and trapped spirit.

Feelings of disintegration are overwhelming and threaten our whole sense of identity. In order to survive we are forced to let go of things that are out of our control and surrender ourselves to something greater. In letting go we are restored and begin to realise that we are a small fragment making up a greater whole.

The parrot series expresses this fragmentation . The wire of the cage fragments the image of the parrots and they start to dematerialize. This releases the eye from a literal translation and suggests the realm of the abstract or spirit. For me the breaking up of matter symbolises a break from the bondage of the material world.
